In 1886, the French retail pharmacist, Stanislas Limousin, invented pharmaceutical glass parenteral ampoules that could be sealed and sterilized for preservation of solutions for hypodermic use.

Drinkable solutions in ampoules are manufactured from 1915, it is first of all horse serum, they are produced by several laboratories. From 1920, the French army appreciated this ready-to-use unitary form. Medical experts are encouraged to develop several dozen formulas for the military.

Ampoules are the unitary pharmaceutical form par excellence for injectable and drinkable liquid preparations and external solutions.
